Sunday Snap – The Millennium Wheel

We were Without a hat in Yorkshire for last week's Sunday Snap. I asked where the location was and the answer is

Ilkley Moor

Striding up the hill with the right answer were Sarah, Anne and Mary.

We're off to the capital this week and the South Bank of the River Thames. In 1999 a Ferris wheel was constructed to celebrate the millennium. One of the reasons a wheel was chosen was because its turning represented the passage of time.

Its prominent position means it overlooks the Houses of Parliament and has views across some of the most famous sights including Buckingham Palace, Horse Guards Parade, St. James's Park, St. Paul's Cathedral, Canary Wharf and in more recent times the Gherkin and Cheesegrater buildings. When I was on it a boy exclaimed, “Look Mum, it's the Eiffel Tower!” His mother assured him it wasn't but didn't know what it was. I could sense their disappointment when I told them it was the television transmitter at Crystal Palace.

It was officially opened by the then Prime Minister, Tony Blair, on the cusp of the new century on 31st December 1999. It didn't open to the paying public until over two months later due to a mechanical problem.

It was never meant to be a permanent attraction with the original lease being for five years. By the end of its second year of operation the popularity of it was such that the operators applied for and were then successfully granted a permanent lease. It is now the most popular paid-for attraction in the UK. This week's question is

What is the name of the wheel?

We were joined last week by Susan and some pink cherry blossom snow. Minoru travelled by bullet train to Ishikawa. There was marathon success for Sarah. It was close up time for Mary with some flower petal veins. It was pancake time for Kara who also spotted some blue tits in a nest box. Ash the cat was loving life in a box at Anne's. Sara's favourite images this week include some lilacs in her garden, the pier at Mt. Baker beach and some big leaves at the botanical garden. Finally, Jesh has found time changes things.

  1. It's the London Eye. I do remember when we used to call it the 'millennium wheel'. Even then I was amazed that it would be a temporary attraction, along with the 'millennium dome' (now The O2 of course).
