Sunday Snap – The Musical

We were looking at an iconic tower in last week's Sunday Snap. I asked what the name of it is and the answer is

The BT Tower

Dialling in with the right answer were Susan, Kara and Anne.

This week we are off to the West End of London and Theatre Land. This time of year is especially popular for going to see pantomimes and shows. Our featured musical this week is one of the most famous in theatre history.

It opened on 8th October 1985 at the Royal Shakespeare Company's Barbican Theatre. Although it was not well received by the critics the public loved it and the original three month run sold out. The show was then transferred to the Palace Theatre In 2004 it moved again to its present location at the Queen's Theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue.

The show is the current longest running musical in the world (The Fantasticks has the all-time record as it ran for nearly 42 years between 1960 and 2002 in New York) and the longest ever musical to run in London's West End. In total it has had over 13,500 performances.

It is based on the novel by Victor Hugo published in 1862. It tells the tale of a convict who is released from prison after serving 19 years for the theft of a loaf of bread to feed to his starving niece. He manages to start a new life but finds himself and the lives of those around him caught up in the French Revolution. The well-known emblem of a black and white etching of a young girl is the character Cosette. It comes from an illustration by Gustave Brion in the original French editions of the book. This week's question is

What is the name of the musical?

We were joined last week by Susan and some supreme technical skills at the school performance. Jo found Elvis alive and well in a Christmas display. As part of a Christmas display Kara found an upside down house and found it a bit tricky to manoeuvre inside. Finally, Jesh has been wondering where the sun has gone.

  4. I might be in the minority but it was all I could do to watch all of Les Mis on TV. I enjoyed the SNL spoof more, maybe there's something wrong with my brain. I'll try to put you badge up but it has not been a very successful code night for me. If it's okay I'd like to put in my sidebar so it's always there. Master of the house, doling out the charm, ready with a handshake—oh no, George Costanza type ear worm.
