Sunday Snap – The Shakespearean Fool

We were in Stratford upon Avon for last week's Sunday Snap of the post box with the Shakespeare quotes. I asked which play one of the quotes came from and the answer is

Romeo and Juliet

Calling out from the balcony with the right answer were Cheryl, Kara, Anne and Soma.

For this week we are staying in Stratford upon Avon and the Shakespeare theme. At the top of the street where Shakespeare's birthplace still stands is this statue of a jester. Throughout Shakespeare's plays in comedies, histories and tragedies a fool features many times. In modern terms 'fool' is used more as an insult but Shakespeare's fools were designed to entertain and inform us. They were able to use their talents in singing, music, dancing, storytelling and skills such as juggling and acrobatics to put across their message. The costume of a fool is often one of multi-coloured panels with a tight hood covering the head and bells adorning it. In his hand would be a stick with a head depicting a fool or puppet on the end.

Some of the most famous of Shakespeare's fools are Dogberry, Falstaff, Feste, Nick Bottom and Puck, and the Gravediggers. Bottom ends up with a donkey's head after Puck plays a joke on him. It one of the Gravediggers who finds the skull of the king's old jester Yorick. Feste seems to know more than anyone else what is going on with the shipwrecked twins and the confusion of mistaken identities. It is he who closes the play with one of his songs,

A great while ago the world begun,
With hey, ho, the wind and the rain.
But that's all one, our play is done,
And we'll strive to please you every day
