Welcome to
May's The Month Ahead. Wedding fever as gripped the UK this
month as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are set to marry in Windsor.
For those not so interested in wedding bells and dresses there's the
bonus of a double bank holiday month. Let's have a look at some of
the traditional feasts and festivals, events and exhibitions that are
happening around the UK this month.
2nd-7th
May - Cheltenham
Jazz Festival. Feel the spirit of jazz as it fills the gardens
and streets in Cheltenham. As well as paid concerts there will be
free music events around the town.
4th-6th
May - World
Pilot Gig Championships 2018. The beautiful Isles of Scilly plays
host once again to the 29th world championships. Local
teams take on international outfits in these traditional vessels.
8th
May - Helston Flora Day.
The Cornish town is bedecked in flowers as the end of winter and
start of spring is celebrated. Houses and shops are covered in floral
displays while a costumed parade dances its way through the town.
12th-13th
May - Plymouth
Pirate Weekend. Don your eye patch for a weekend of swashbuckling
fun. Jump onboard one of the tall ships or head out to see on a power
boat.
9th-13th
May - Royal Windsor Horse Show.
Windsor isn't just about weddings this month. One of the Queen's
favourite pastimes is shown off with show jumping, displays and the
famous Shetland Pony Grand National.
11th-27th
May - Norwich and Norfolk
Festival. A massive 17 days of events across Norfolk. It starts
with a procession through Norwich city centre and then music,
literature, performance and art exhibitions over the following two
weeks.
17th-19th
May - Devon County Show.
Sample the best in local food and drink whilst enjoying the rural
displays and competitions.
19th-20th
May - Crab and
Lobster Festival, Cromer and Sheringham, Norfolk. A weekend
celebration of the seaside and seafaring. It kicks off with a
traditional variety concert at Cromer Pier.
22nd-26th
May - RHS
Chelsea Flower Show. The premier horticultural event of the year
set in the grounds of the Royal Chelsea Hospital. A few tickets are
still available but even if you can't get in it's worth walking round
the nearby streets to take in the shop displays.
25th-28th
May - Geronimo Festival.
The first of two for this year takes place at Arley Hall in Cheshire.
The ultimate children's festival with all your Cbeebies favourites
such as Justin Fletcher, Mr Bloom and Cook and Line from Swashbuckle.
