The Month Ahead - April 2018

Welcome to April's The Month Ahead. This month starts with in the middle of the Easter weekend and remember don't fall for any April Fools! Let's have a look at some of the traditional feasts and festivals, events and exhibitions that are happening around the UK this month.

1st and 2nd April - Easter Medieval Jousting, Knebworth House, Hertfordshire. Go back in time to see the knights charging on their horses as part of this exhilarating display.

7th and 8th April - Cornwall Spring Flower Show, Boconnoc, Liskeard. Delight in the stunning horticultural displays as growers and sellers come together. This year there will also be an Artisan Craft Marquee.

8th-12th April - Man Engine Wales. On tour across Wales is the 11.2m mechanical miner. Wake him up by singing him a song!

13th April - 24th June - Poppies: Wave, Fort Nelson, Hampshire. The Poppies tour moves on to Fort Nelson in Hampshire. During World War I it was home to part of Herbert Kitchener's volunteer army.

13th April - 27th May - National Nightingale Festival. Celebrate the sound of the nightingale with a series of events such as a listening walk, the folklore of a nightingale and musical performances.

14th April - Big Sheep Grand National, Bideford, Devon. The six specially selected sheep and their knitted jockeys battle it out for this year's cup.

19th-23rd April - Mull Music Festival. A blend traditional Gaelic and modern Scottish folk meets in this island music festival. No tickets needed so just turn up!

21st April - Feast of St. George, Trafalgar Square. Celebrate the patron saint of England in the heart of London with music, workshops and a friendly dragon.

21st April – The Queen's 92nd birthday will marked as usual with gun salutes in Hyde Park, London; Windsor Great Park and the Tower of London.

21st April - William Shakespeare's Birthday Celebration Parade, Stratford-Upon-Avon. Watch the line of Shakespeare's characters, marching bands and local schoolchildren as they make their way to Shakespeare's resting place at Holy Trinity Church

21st and 22nd April – FES.TEA.VAL, Chiswick House. The nation's favourite drink in all its forms can be sampled over the weekend in London. Alternatively find an event near you or organise your own for National Tea Day.

22nd April - London Marathon. The streets of London will be closed to cars but full of runners and spectators as the 38th London Marathon takes place.

All events are subject to change. Please check with the organisers before travelling.
