We were off walking up Kinder Scout at the scene of the historic Mass Trespass for last week's Sunday Snap. I asked which National Park Kinder Scout is in and the answer is
Peak District
Reaching the top with the right answer were Susan and Kara.
This week we are off to Leeds. In 1822 Joshua Tetley founded his eponymous brewery just outside of Leeds city centre. Throughout the 19th century the business grew in strength with the company brewing more and different beers and also buying pubs. A number of takeovers and mergers in the 1950s and 60s meant that Tetley's became the largest brewer of cask ale in the country. At this time Tetley's employed over 1,000 people. The company was able to retain a large customer fan base due to its traditional image and consistently high quality beers. Until 2006 it still used dray horses to deliver to its pubs in Leeds.
In 1998 Tetley's was taken over by a large Danish brewery company. It is best known for its green packaged lager of the same name which had the advertising tagline, “Probably the best lager in the world”. The headquarters building you can see in the photograph was built in 1931. It was styled in the fashionable Art Deco design that was popular at the time. Today it is home to a contemporary arts and learning centre. The actual brewery building was closed in 2011 and demolished in 2012 by its Danish owners who said it had other production sites which were bigger and more modern. This week's question is
Which company took over Tetley's?
We were joined last week by Susan with a bike ride and Mother's Day. Kara has paid a visit to flower seat in London and the cheetahs at Longleat. A sad goodbye from Cheryl. Braving the latest round of snow was Anne's cat. Finally, we had a handmade Bar Mitzvah card by Lisa.
