We were at Sheffield Manor Lodge for last week's Sunday Snap. I asked who was imprisoned there and the answer is
Mary, Queen of Scots
Keeping their heads on with the right answer were Lisa, Cheryl, Kara, Anne and Tammy.
We're getting ready to celebrate Chinese New Year this week. For those of you who joined us in January you will remember we went a bit statue mad. The reason I didn't say where they were was because they are all situated in the same city as this Chinatown. The archway or paifang is decorated with depictions of dragons and phoenixes. After the city was twinned with the Chinese city of Wuhan in 1986 the council gave it as a gift to the Chinese community.
The Chinese community was established in this city in the north west of England in the early 20th century. Many Chinese settlers saw it as an alternative to the port of Liverpool where their trading ships full of silk and cotton wool had arrived. At first the Chinese community wasn't very big. After the Second World War the shortage of labour meant that employment restrictions were lifted and this encouraged many people from both China and Hong Kong to migrate. Today the area is home to a plethora of restaurants, supermarkets, medicine shops and a popular Mahjong group. This week's question is
Where is this Chinatown?
We had a bumper linkup last week. Thank you to everyone who joined in both old and new! Susan's two were sporting new haircuts. We had a pretty pastel sky from Tammy. In New Zealand Betty went back in time with a penny farthing bicycle. Sara found orange flamingos, an orchid bouquet and a crocodile. For a Bar Mitzvah Lisa has made a selection of hand cut cards. In Norway Cheryl found love hearts as lights. Kara had one jumping off the swimming blocks and another happy with an unicorn. The chair was big enough for three for Anne's trio. Soma has been inspired by astral events. In the Florida Trails Sharon has found flora and fauna. Finally, Wolfgang has showed us that a garden can be everything.

Is it Manchester?
ReplyDeleteI'm not familiar with this arch, but we do have a rather impressive China Town here in Birmingham. I'm guessing it wasn't built as easy access by ship though, not being right in the middle of the country!
ReplyDeleteLove the Chinese decorations. They area always so intricate.
ReplyDeleteI think it's Manchester, but not sure. The decorations are lovely x
