We were going round the twist with last week's Sunday Snap of The Orbit. I asked the name of the stadium that The Orbit is next to and the answer is
The London Stadium or originally the Olympic Stadium
Untangling the knot with the right answer were Cheryl, Anne and Kara.
We're off to London's West End this week. After the flashing advertising boards Piccadilly Circus is known for being a well-known meeting on the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain. As its name suggests it was erected to commemorate the 7th Earl of Shaftesbury. As a MP he was instrumental in improving the conditions for people in Victorian times known as 'lunatics'. He also introduced and supported laws which prevented children from working as chimney sweeps, underground miners and in factories.
After Lord Shaftesbury's death in 1884 the fountain was constructed in way of thanks for a lifetime of philanthropic works. At the top of it is a statue of the Greek god Anteros. He was the son of Aphrodite and in Greek mythology was 'The God of Selfless Love' – a perfect nod to the achievements of Lord Shaftesbury. However, the design of a naked archer was seen by some as inappropriate despite an attempt to rename the statute The Angel of Christian Charity. Instead Anteros was confused with his brother who was the Greek good of sensual love or sexual attraction. Although this was at odds with the life of Lord Shaftesbury it is the name of this Greek god that has stuck over the years. This week's question is
Who is the statue of Anteros mistaken for?
We were joined last week by Susan and a curly new look. Cheryl found that the sign said it all. Sitting on the fence were the squirrels at Anne's. Finally, Kara has been on a cruise around Old Harry Rocks and exploring the pumpkin patch.
