Sunday Snap – The church on the hill

We were out shopping in the fashion capital of the world for last week's Sunday Snap. I asked which shop with the magnificent glass dome was the cathedral of shopping and the answer is

Galeries Lafayette

We're off to a proper church this week; not a cathedral but a basilica. Although this church with its many domes is one of the most familiar sights in Paris it is not as old as many people think. It started being built in 1875 and was finished in 1914. Due to the war it wasn't consecrated until 1919. Its position on the summit of the artists' quarter of Montmartre means it is located on the highest point of the city. As such it commands unique views over the city.

After the defeat of France by Prussia in September 1870 it was decided that a new church needed to be built to try and restore some of moral and spiritual values it was felt had been lost. Not long after this came the uprising of the Paris Commune which resulted in the execution of the Archbishop of Paris. During the occupation of Paris the site of Montmartre was the scene of one of its battles. It has been denied that the decision to build the church and on that site was because of what occurred during the Commune. This is because the 'National Vow' to construct a church at Montmartre was published before the events of the Paris Commune took place. This week's question is

What is the name of the church?
We were joined last week by Susan and a return to the 1980s with a bathtime with Matey. There's been a big day for Kara with the first day of school and an underwater adventure. Lisa has been to another basilica in the form of Gaudi's unfinished Sagrada Familia as part of a trip to Barcelona. In Novia Scotia Aurora has been on a tour of some of the churches in Grand-Pré.
