Sunday Snap – The Yorkshire Coast Castle

We were in the Peak District looking at the grave of one of Robin Hood's Merry Men for last week's Sunday Snap. I asked who the faithful, giant follower was and the answer is

Little John

Standing tall with the right answer were
Anne, Cheryl and Kara.

For this week we are off the North Yorkshire coast. The town which this castle overlooks is the largest holiday resort on the Yorkshire coast. The castle is situated on top of a rocky cliff which separates the seafront into two bays. With its views across the North Sea this strategic position has been used since Iron Age times as a settlement. There are remains of a Roman signal station plus an Anglo-Saxon chapel.

It had its most celebrated period during the 13th and 14th centuries when the castle was used by royalty. Such was the importance of the town thanks to the castle that an annual six week fair was granted a royal charter. A ballad about the fair has been sung for centuries but was popularised once again by Simon and Garfunkel. Since the Civil War the castle has been in ruins after it changed hands seven times between the Royalists and Parliamentarians. On 16th December 1914 the castle with other parts of the town were hit by shells fired by German warships. In all 19 people were killed in the raid and the attack became a turning point in the British public's opinion of the war as it was seen to target civilians. Today it is open to the public and in the care of English Heritage. This week's question is

What is the name of the castle?

We were joined last week by
Susan with stunning skies and final nursery moments. Cheryl's snaps this week have been courtesy of Snapchat. Kara had a make a call to the Ghostbusters and found a couple of new dinosaurs in the Lost Kingdom. In New Zealand Bettyl has been on gravestone search.
