Welcome to May's The
Month Ahead. We have a double Bank Holiday this month so there's
extra events and days out to look forward to. Let's have a look at
some of the traditional feasts and festivals, events and exhibitions
that are happening around the UK this month.
All month - Scottish
Rhododendron Festival – Across Scotland delight in the display
of colour that are the season's rhododendrons. A selection of gardens
will be open with many of them supporting the charity Scotland's
Gardens.
1st-14th
May - Isle
of Wight Walking Festival – Whatever your walking level there's
something for everyone from 1 mile strolls right up to the ultra 24
hour 72 mile round the Island coastal challenge.
1st May - The
Rites of Spring, Leicester. Join in with the May Day celebrations
at The Guildhall with maypole dancing and Morris Dancers plus some
crafty fun.
5th-7th
May - Southport
Festival – Head to the coast for a cultural feast of music,
poetry and street art. The town will be alive with entertainment and
free performances for three days.
13th May –
Asparagus
Feast, Burwash Larder, Cambridge – Make the most of the short
English asparagus season with this free celebration of all things
asparagus.
19th May-18th
June - Ely
Cathedral Science Festival – The first science festival at Ely
Cathedral will take in a month long series of events including
exhibitions, lectures, walks and concerts.
20th-21st
May - Simply Cheshire,
Arley Hall and Gardens – Find the best products from local
designers, makers and producers. A chance to buy some of the best
unique items from independent sellers.
23rd-27th
May - RHS
Chelsea Flower Show – The horticultural highlight of the year
set out in the grounds of the Royal Hospital, Chelsea. If you can't
get hold of a ticket don't forget to tune into the BBC's coverage
throughout the week.
27th-29th
May - East
Lancashire Railway 1940s Weekend, Bury – Be transported back to
the war years with special events on the steam railway. If you've got
a uniform or a 1940's dress dig it out and come in costume!
28th May –
Wentworth Music
Festival, South Yorkshire – The house and grounds of Wentworth
Woodhouse have had a checked history over the years but the first
Wentworth Music Festival is one step along the way to securing its
future. Acts lined up include Heaven 17, Tony Christie, Lemar plus
the Last Laugh Comedy Stage.
28th May -
National Garden Scheme 90th
Anniversary – On the 28th May 1927 the first gardens
opened for what was to become the National Garden Scheme. Exactly 90
years later a selection of gardens will be opening for special
anniversary event.
