We were taking a stroll down
Oxford Street for last week's Sunday Snap of the Winged
Figure. I asked who designed the Winged Figure and the answer is
Barbara Hepworth
We're off to Warwickshire
for this week's Sunday Snap. The Royal Pump and Baths was opened in
1814 after what was originally been a small agricultural village had
seen an increase in visitors coming to 'take the waters'. There was
already a number of spa baths in the area but this one was much
grander and comprised a total of 20 baths plus an assembly room. It
also had the world's first modern gravity fed piped hot water system.
Queen Victoria visited the town in 1830 whilst still a princess and
was so enamoured with it that she granted a 'Royal' prefix to be used
from 1838. With a nod to the bath rooms around the town 'Spa' was
added to the end. Over the years the popularity of spas began to
decline and many of the other spa baths in the area closed. The Royal
Pump and Baths survived closure at the time thanks to the grandeur of
the building and the fact it expanded its facilities to include a
Turkish Bath and swimming pool. It continued to be used as swimming
pool until 1989 when a new leisure centre was opened. It was left
unused for several years until the local council decided to refurbish
it. Today it is open to the public as an art gallery and museum and
incorporates the local library and visitor information centre. This
week's question is
What town is The Royal
Pump Room and Spa in?
We were joined last week by
Anne
and the pretty heart cake her daughter made. Kara has been down at
the beach with the very green seaweed
and also paid a visit to see her beloved Chelsea
play. Finally Susan
has had a week of spinning dresses and dramatic sunsets.

I'm not 100% but I'm sure it's Harrogate x
ReplyDeleteI think that is Royal Leamington Spa
ReplyDeleteNot so far from me although I've only been there a couple of times, I'm pretty sure it's Leamington Spa. I may have to put it on my list of places to visit again soon.
ReplyDeleteIf it's Royal, I'd guess at Leamington Spa
