We were looking at the home
of a short-lived queen for last week's Sunday
Snap. I asked who was the nine day queen who had lived at
Bradgate Park and the answer is
Lady Jane Grey
After last week's sad tale I
have a comedy connection for this week's Sunday Snap. In the back
streets of the Doncaster suburb of Balby is this hairdressing salon.
Since 1976 it has also been known as the location of the grocer's
shop belonging to the miserly Arkwright in a BBC sitcom. Whilst
Arkwright's version of shopkeeping seemed stuck in an era long gone
with its assistant service and antiquated cash till the hairdresser's
in real life doesn't seem to have moved on since either.
To enable filming to take
place the hairdresser's closed during the summer and the production
team moved in to transform the outside of the shop with Arkwright's
latest offers and money making schemes. Across the road lies the
house of Nurse Gladys Emmanuel who Arkwright has been informally
engaged to for many years. The closest it seems Arkwright ever got to
getting inside Nurse Gladys' house was by going up a ladder and
looking in her bedroom window. After four series the programme came
to an end in 1985. The series was brought back with a sequel in 2014
with Arkwright's much put upon nephew, Granville, now running the
shop. This week's question is
What is the name of TV
series that featured Arkwright's shop?
We were joined last week by
Susan
and a Valentine's orchid and date night. Kara has been in Scotland to
see the One O'clock Gun go off at Edinburgh
Castle and some cold looking water running though Glen
Doll. There's been a stack of new books arriving at Anne's
house. Lula
has been out finding snowdrops. Finally, Lisa
has been taking a walk under the blue skies of Givat Barfilia.

Open All Hours ... and I always assumed it was a mock up in a studio somewhere !
ReplyDeleteOpen all Hours, and I thought it was in a studio too. We still have a corner shop in our area, it just wouldn't be the same without it.
ReplyDeleteOpen all hours :)
ReplyDeleteI have no idea lol, although we still have plenty of little corner shops here in Fife, Scotland. It's always been part of small town living here.
ReplyDeleteOpen all hours but I didn't know it was filmed in Doncaster. x
ReplyDeleteHad no idea that was Doncaster!
ReplyDeleteOpen all Hours - so funny, even now x x
ReplyDeleteOh wow I loved Open all hours, had no idea that's where it was filmed though.
