If
you were to ask me if I have seen a certain film the probable answer
I would give is 'no'. It's not that I don't like watching films I
just don't seem to get round to watching them. This goes from classic
films, teenage coming of age dramas through to Hollywood
blockbusters. Take for example Citizen Kane – it may be over
70 years old now but it is still described as many as the best film
that has ever been made. Even on Rotten
Tomatoes it scores an amazing 100%. I first recorded it on video
(yes, video!) when I was doing my journalism degree. Orson Welles'
epic tale is one based on the real life publishing tycoon William
Randolph Hearst so perfect all round for my studies. It remained
unwatched. Last year I recorded it again when it was shown but I
still haven't put aside 2 hours to watch it.
As
someone who was a teenager in the 1980s and 1990s you would have
expected that I would have watched back then the big blockbuster
movies of the day. While Tom Cruise was single-handedly making
aviator sunglasses the must wear accessory through his role in Top
Gun the whole thing completely passed me by. As did Tom Cruise's
next outings in The Color of Money and Cocktail. Off
the top of my head here are some more films which always feature in
must-watch lists but I've never seen.
Casablanca
Gone
With the Wind
Breakfast
at Tiffany's
Grease
Dirty
Dancing
North
By Northwest
Pulp
Fiction
The
Usual Suspects
The
Godfather
Taxi
Driver
E.T
Psycho
Reservoir
Dogs
American
Beauty
The
Sixth Sense
Much
to my husband's disgust I fell asleep in the cinema when we went to
watch The Matrix. Consequently I didn't go with him to see
the sequels. I never went to the cinema to watch The Lord of the
Rings but when we watched it at home it bored me to tears. When
The Hobbit came out my husband and daughter went together to
see it whilst I stayed at home doing something more interesting such
as tidying my sock drawer. Last year we recorded American Hustle
and sat down to watch it but after 15 minutes my husband and I didn't
have a clue what was going on and decided to abandon it. So I have
tried to watch certain films but failed spectacularly.
I
have a challenge for 2017 and that is to watch 5 classic films I have
never seen before. These films fall into different genres and
probably aren't films I would normally make the effort to sit down
and watch but in the spirit of #NewYearNewYou I'm prepared to give
them a try. If you fancy joining me you can buy the films here.
Westworld
Get
Carter
GoodFellas
Dirty
Harry
Strangers
on a Train

I dont get the chance to watch films much now. I used to love going to the cinema
ReplyDeleteI had never seen Star Wars until I met my husband! The revelation I had when I realised that Space Balls was a parody of Star Wars - my husband still laughs at me!
ReplyDeleteAs a film buff, I am concerned that you've missed so many classics! Glad you are now on your way though - and please add Casablanca to the next lot!
ReplyDeleteWhat a super collection of classic movies.I have seen some but not all.
ReplyDeleteI am a bit of a movie buff but I have to confess that I have never seen the 5 classics that you are planning to watch this year. I did watch 1984 last week though - that was on my 'must watch' list! Good luck with your challenge.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness... You NEED to watch Breakfast at Tiffanys! It's one of my all time favourites, and never fails to put a smile on my face...
ReplyDeleteI've only seen three of the films on your list - don't tell anyone ;-)
ReplyDeleteSome films I haven't managed to watch yet here, will have to remedy it soon :) x
ReplyDeleteGreat lost, there's a few I need to watch!
