Sunday Snap – The Seabird Rock

We were in Gateshead for last week's Sunday Snap of The Angel of the North. I asked who designed it and the answer was

Sir Antony Gormley

Sculpting the right answer were Susan, and Jen.

We're continuing our road trip this week with a visit to the coast. From Gateshead we made our way across the border and around to North Berwick. You can't fail to miss this landmark in the sea which is actually a volcanic plug made when magma hardened. It was formed over 320 million years ago. It is no longer home to any human inhabitants but instead in the peak season its residents are gannets. With over 150,000 the rock is the biggest Northern gannet colony in the world. Squeezing themselves on the rock as well are shags, guillemots and razorbills. At the bottom of the rock you can find seals swimming around. It is no surprise that the rock has featured on both BBC's Springwatch and Autumnwatch and is the current Countryfile Magazine's Nature Reserve of the Year.

The last people to live on the rock left in 1988 when the Barns Ness Lighthouse, built in 1901, was automated. Previously to that before the start of the First World War the rock was let out to tenants who fished the surrounding waters, kept sheep and rather shockingly killed young seabirds and collected eggs to sell as a delicacy. Situated underneath the lighthouse is the remains of castle which has been seen royalty visit it but also used as prison. Also on the rock is the ruins of a chapel named after St. Baldred who once lived here in the 7th century. This week's question is

What is the name of the rock?

We were joined last week by Betty who has been photographing churches in New Zealand. Both Sarah and Kara have been enjoying the Easter fun at Lulworth Castle. Also spotted by Kara was a rather handsome peacock. There was bubbles and bubbles of fun for Susan's daughter. Both Sue and Jack have found that spring has finally sprung.
