If there's one thing I'm
very guilty of then it is turning my laptop on of an evening and
spending the whole night working on it. Let's face it it is exactly
what I am doing at the moment. So instead of spending my Saturday
evening writing this week's Sunday Snap post I had it all finished in the morning so we could have a
family film night.
There only seems to be a
handful of television programmes on at the moment that are suitable
for families to watch together so a film is a better choice for
family viewing. As Gracewell of Kentford have found out at their care homes regular movie
nights where family and friends can get together are a great way to
socialise and stay in contact with each other. For our movie choice
we went with the recommendation from Miss JibberJabber of Into the
Woods.
Before
the film started we did a bit of preparation. Pjs, onesies and
slipper socks on. A selection of sweet and savoury snacks on hand.
Lights dimmed and perhaps most importantly of all laptops, tablets
and mobile phone removed from the room!
The film
of Into the Woods is the movie adaptation of the Stephen
Sondheim Broadway musical of the same name. It brings together the
classic Grimm Brothers' tales of Cinderella, Jack and the
Beanstalk, Little Red Riding Hood and Rapunzel. The story
centres on a childless couple, played by James Corden and Emily
Blunt, who find out that reason they are unable to have children is
that they have been cursed by a witch. The witch, played by Meryl
Streep, visits them and says the only chance they have to break the
curse is to bring her a cow as white as milk, a cape as red as blood,
hair as yellow as corn and a slipper as pure as gold. Of course those
familiar with the four fairy tales will know that each of these items
can be found with the protagonists.
You can
definitely tell that the film was originally a stage musical. A lot
of the dialogue is sung rather than spoken however there doesn't seem
to be one real showstopper or memorable number. Master JibberJabber
though was quite mesmerised at times by it. It's not a film for very
young children as the the Grimm Brother's stories they are based on
are more on the original grim side rather than modern fairy tales. It
is however a great choice for a family film as you didn't know how
the story would go next and it had enough content to keep both adults
and children interested.
Do you have movie nights
with your friends and family? What's your favourite film to watch at
a get together?
This is a collaborative
post.
