We were back in Sheffield for last week's Sunday Snap of The Crucible. This theatre is currently hosting the annual World Snooker Championships and I asked when it moved to The Crucible. The answer is
1977
A virtual 147 break this
week goes to Angela
with the correct answer. Whilst researching last week's Sunday Snap I
read about the 'Curse of The Crucible'. Since the World Snooker
Championships moved to Sheffield in 1977 no first-time champion has
gone on to defend their title the year after winning it. This
includes all the multiple winners such as Steve Davis (first won
1981, lost first round 1982), Stephen Hendry (won 1990, lost
quarter-finals 1991) and Ronnie O'Sullivan (won 2001, lost
semi-finals 2002). On Friday night I sat and watched last year's
champion Mark Selby lose to Anthony McGill. The curse continues...
For this week's Sunday Snap
a first glance at it and some people may mistake it for Nelson's
Column. The statue on top was in fact created by the same sculptor,
Edward Hodges Baily, who made the Nelson statue to go on top of
Nelson's Column. However the head had to be replaced after it was
knocked off by a bolt of lightning in 1941. Built in 1838 this
monument was commissioned to celebrate the passing of the Great
Reform Act of 1832 which saw the reform of the House of Commons plus
gave the vote to a greater number of people. This monument is
dedicated and named after the Prime Minister at the time of this law
being passed. After being re-elected as Prime Minister the next year
he oversaw the abolition of slavery throughout the British Empire.
Born and bred in Northumberland he even had a blend of tea named him
– a bergamot flavoured variety which I am rather partial to. This
week's question therefore is
Who is this monument named
after?
We were joined last week by
Candace
whose brave duo had donned their wetsuits for a rather chilly dip.
