Plenty of readers were able
to identify last week's London Fashion Week Sunday Snap but for some it proved a frustrating tease. I just hope
there wasn't any diva like meltdowns in searching for the answer! The
correct answer was
Somerset House
It's time to go back up
north this week to Sheffield. The huge painting is by the amazing
Sheffield artist known as Faunagraphic.
Across the city you will find her work which is usually inspired by
nature. I took two shots of this but I thought I would use the
landscape version to show exactly how big it is. In the background is
Sheffield Station and rising behind it is the amphitheatre at Sheaf
Valley Park. This portrait is based on a well-known photograph of
Harry Brearley (the badges are Faunagraphic's own artistic licence).
Brearley was born in Sheffield in 1871 in impoverished circumstances.
At the age of 12 he left school to work in the same company that
employed his father. In 1939 his work was seen as such a valuable
contribution to Sheffield that he was awarded the Freedom of the
City. His invention in 1913 was revolutionary and something that
Sheffield is famous for throughout the world. It has many uses but
even in a standard domestic kitchen millions of people use it
everyday for their cutlery, sinks, kettles, toasters and saucepans.
This week's question is
What is Harry Brearley
credited with inventing?
